THE S. STEIN STORY"NEVER BE AFRAID OF WORK" was one of my father's favorite sayings, and he consequently raised three very industrious daughters! My sisters' and my work has been one of the great joys of our lives, and transporting our gear around has been a constant part of our respective jobs as designers and photographers. As an Industrial Designer by trade, I began designing custom gear bags to transport the tools for our various career ventures - custom travel camera cases for my sister Jude, the photographer; the ultimate design materials and i-Book tote for Char, fashion designer; and for myself - I have designed everything from expedition duffels to a tiny leather Mini-Rollie camera case. My greatest inspiration for workbag design has been the purely utilitarian bags from hardware and Army surplus stores. My collection of canvas bricklayer's bags, carpenter's tool belts, and my antique leather doctor's satchel all share the same sense of purpose and history, all made from natural materials that become more interesting with wear and age. S.STEIN workbags began with my quest to design a perfect, compact bag to hold all my daily essentials, plus a little bit more. The essentials list read like this:
THE BABY MESSENGER BAG was born at 9" wide, 7" tall and 3" deep. Builtfrom18 gauge cotton canvas, industrial cotton marine webbing, indestructible suede for pockets and trim, and the best chromed steel hardware. As for holding all the essentials? Everything fit, with room to spare for a billed cap and a Power Bar. From this inspiring little bag came many more S.STEIN workbag styles, each one designed for working, living, and going "for the long haul."
